Central Truth

Fear oftentimes prevents us from unconditionally serving the Lord. By trusting completely in Him, we can accomplish unbelievable success that glorifies His presence in our lives.

Reflections

As a relatively new mom, I'm constantly overwhelmed with things to do...have plenty of fresh milk and diapers on hand, keep the house straightened, spend quality time playing with our daughter. Oh yeah, pay the bills, pick up Mark's dry cleaning, cook dinner, exercise, read the Bible, do laundry, return phone calls and emails. Most days, the only thing I accomplish is having fun with Sarah. If I don't get all of these things done, I am fearful of letting down my husband and daughter.

Like Gideon, I have an obligation to take care of my family while obediently serving the Lord but I often feel ill-equipped no matter how prepared I think I am. Gideon, too, thought he was prepared for battle by organizing an army of 32,000 trained soldiers but God knew that the soldiers would take credit for any victory. Instead, by reducing their number to 300, everyone would realize that Gideon's success was due entirely to the Lord.

Reading this story of Gideon's unlikely victory, I realize that God has already prepared me with the weapon necessary to serve him...a believing heart.

As I attempt to live life on MY terms, prayer and scriptures like this help get me back on track to listening to God's Word and living life on HIS terms. By obeying God, I am filled with the courage and confidence to lead the charge of honoring Him in all that I do. As a result, all of the "things" that I'm trying to accomplish on a daily basis fall into place (or along the wayside) and I'm a much calmer, peaceful and victorious wife, mother and servant of God.

Discussion Questions

1.  What overwhelming tasks are you trying to accomplish on your own?

2.  What "things" or "fears" occupy your time and prevent you from serving God?

3.  How much time do you spend listening to God to understand His plan for your life?

4.  How prepared are you to let go of selfish endeavors and instead honor the Lord in all that you do?

Thanks Carla for the vital reminder to maintain and nourish a believing heart. Without it, we have no hope. This is exactly what I needed to hear this morning.

Carla, I laughed at your bio (because I feel the same way) and I was encouraged by your devotional. I know that I try to do too much or get off track of what's important because I am trying to do it all on my own. Thank you for this important reminder! Love you!
