YOU CAN PERSUADE SOME OF THE PEOPLE SOME OF THE TIME, BUT ...
- Key Verse
- "And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of God-fearing Greeks and a number of the leading women. But the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people." (Acts 17:4-5, NASB)

Central Truth
Paul and Silas were able to persuade some of the people in Thessalonica with the good news of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But many were not persuaded, acting as a mob, they tried to force them out in the middle of the night.
Reflections
I have seen numerous books on the art of persuasion. I have even read a couple of them. But nothing compares to the accomplishments of Paul and Silas as they spread the good news of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. I am amazed at the success they enjoyed. Even though they were obviously unable to persuade everyone with the good news, this passage shows us that some of the Jews of Thessalonica were receptive to the teachings of Paul and Silas. However many were not, and these unreceptive Jews were jealous because Paul and Silas were enjoying success in their ministry and many people had become believers.Thankfully, we live in a country where many people are amenable to hearing the gospel and we know that we are surrounded by many other believers. Take comfort in knowing that when we tell others about Jesus we will probably not be threatened in the middle of the night by an angry mob. Many times however, when attempting to share our faith, we are met with skepticism and disbelief. Science has played a major role in giving the non-believer reasons to doubt. For example, the Big Bang Theory basically states the universe was formed by an explosion of atoms, carbons and gases. As a Christian I am truly perplexed that people actually believe this. But what astounds me more is how many Christians choose this theory over the truth of the Bible. Paul and Silas persuaded with the good news of God's word. It makes we wonder are we persuaded by the truth of God's Word or the words of scientists?
I am thankful to know the truth, and appreciate that I can defend my faith and that the Bible has the answers. I am also grateful for Fellowship Dallas which has given me useful tools to contend for my faith and spread the good news.
