IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Key Verse

"In Lystra sat a man who could not use his feet, lame from birth, who had never walked. This man was listening to Paul as he was speaking. When Paul stared intently at him and saw he had faith to be healed, he said with a loud voice, 'Stand upright on your feet.' And the man leaped up and began walking." (ACTS 14:8-10, NET)

Central Truth

We believers are one of God’s means for being present for His children.

Reflections

What do you experience when a street person approaches you or waves a sign on the corner as you pull up in your vehicle? The majority of my encounters have an unsettling similarity. The men and women looking to me for some pocket change search my face seeking my gaze. I wonder what it is they are ultimately searching for as they stare. Are they looking for affirmation that they are worthy of acknowledgment? Are they seeking a glimpse of what might have been in past relationships, but never embraced? Are they desiring a presence of some kind of goodness instead of the evil encountered each day? Are their eyes searching for God hoping this stranger they pursue may offer answers, comfort, some glimpse of heaven in an otherwise futile life?

The Apostle Paul saw the lame man in Lystra. In an instant, Paul entered a realm where there existed only one man before him engaging and entering completely into the man’s presence. The lame man sought acknowledgment, a desire for what could be. He was looking for goodness and for a life to be fulfilled. Paul offered it all completely and abundantly. Paul entered in to the life of this lame man and served God’s purpose.

I think about all of the times I walked by and disregarded the person God has placed before me. It has covered the entire spectrum of individuals . . . my wife, my children, my friends, co-workers, and strangers. How many times has there been the need for a kind word, a question asked showing concern, or a touch of compassion that I casually dismissed? How many times could I have offered to honor and cherish the child of God my Lord presented to me but did nothing? I grieve the opportunities lost and now seek to regain them, led by His grace and loving direction.

Discussion Questions

1. Reflect on the times God showed up through a person who entered your life. What was the experience like and how did God show Himself?

2. Think of the people in your life, this moment, who need to experience God’s touch through you. How may you serve God’s purpose in their lives, now?

3. When will you start to serve God’s purpose for both His lost and found children?

Thanks for this uncomfortable challenge to see people with the eyes of Jesus and be willing to let Him show me what to do and do it! Blessings on you and your family!

If we could only SEE people like Paul who "fixed his gaze upon him" maybe they would be open to our message. Great challenge Michael.

Michael, You had me at hello! I did a school project once in which I stood on a street corner here in Dallas as a panhandler. I was not prepared for what I experienced. I felt fear, humiliation, and shame. I encountered verbal insults from some. Most adults would look away if I ever caught their gaze. Even those who gave me money would not look me in the eyes. Interestingly, children would continue to stare at me even if I looked back. It was children who gave me hope and acceptance in their stare. Thank you for the encouragement to take time out for all God’s people.
