SIMPLY COMPLICATED

Key Verse
"For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness - but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." (1 Corinthians 1:22-24)

Central Truth

When it comes to knowing God and what He is all about, our wisdom and understanding fall short. Only He can open the eyes of the blind and reveal truth about Himself to those whom He created.

Reflections

They call them "Senior Moments" and that's not exactly fair. Not fair because it happens to both young and old.

-You go into the study for something, only to forget why you went in there seconds later.

-You misplace your keys...again!
-I've actually driven halfway to work when I meant to go to the grocery store for my wife.

-But, my all-time favorite is when you lose your glasses only to find them on your face!

These should be renamed "people moments" because we've all had them - young and old. The frustrating part is that we don't make these kind of mistakes once, but many times. It drives us crazy because of how foolish we feel when we simply miss it.

For those of us who know Jesus Christ as our Savior, it's hard to understand how others simply miss it. No-brainer...right? Just believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead. But, this is truly complicated for so many. It's because the cross of Christ is foolishness to those who are perishing. They feel they have to earn it and figure it out. For those who simply believe in Jesus for eternal life, it's the power of God over eternal death.

God's power was made simple in the life of Jesus through His obedient, sacrificial love. But His followers wanted something much more complicated. They wanted Him to destroy their enemies and set up His kingdom immediately. Their hope was placed in overcoming the Romans with brute force and thoughtful strategy. Most would agree that it would make sense to take such an approach. But, Jesus kept reminding those who followed that He would die and overcome through loving sacrifice. They missed His simple message more than once. It was all over the prophecies in their scriptures. It was a true "Senior Moment" for Jesus' followers as the simplicity of God's perfect plan was overlooked.

We need God to help us understand the simple message of the cross. May God open our eyes to His wisdom and understanding for His glory and our salvation!

Discussion Questions

1. Why is the message of the cross complicated for so many?

2. How can we help others see the simplicity of it?

3. Go to www.ACT111.org and train to share the gospel with clarity and simplicity.

Well, I'm sure I was glad that you made it to the store. :) And, may we both always look to, rely on and share freely His simple message and loving sacrifice.
